    Influenza virus will be used as an example of how viruses and microbial pathogens use glycans as receptors and must adapt to the receptors on their intended host. Influenza viruses use sialic acid containing glycans as receptors on host cells and adapt to the sialic acid containing glycans of the species they infect. The binding is mediated by the influenza hemagglutinin. Influenza virus also has a receptor destroying enzyme, called neuraminidase, needed to escape from infected cells. We will cover how influenza adapts to human airway receptors and maintains a balance between the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase during constant change due to immune selective pressure.
