MMW 13 | SYLLABUS

This course takes a global perspective on the connections, entanglements, and exchanges between Afro-Eurasia and the Americas as well as the political, social, and economic transformations that shaped the period from 1200 to 1750 CE. It focuses on moments of cross-cultural exchange (especially the transfer of technologies, ideas, and customs), encounters (continental interactions, travel, trade, and migration), and hegemony (colonization, slavery, war, intolerance, and state violence) in various cultural zones of Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. This course is not meant to be exhaustive or comprehensive regarding either topics or geographic regions. Rather it focuses on broad trends and local practices. Topics include population movements, the rise of secularism and urban centers, the creation and expansion of empires, colonialism, the Atlantic slave trade, religious schisms, disease and demographic shifts, intellectual, scientific, technological, military, and maritime innovations, and the growing economic integration of Afro-Eurasia and the Americas.

Monday, Week 5, Step 2, 5/1/23, 11:59 pm PT: Choose a topic & get TA approval; Complete Library Topic Development Tutorial; Compile an annotated bibliography; Write an Abstract (10%)

Wednesday, Week 8, Step 3a, 5/24/23, 11:59 pm PT: Write a rough draft; submit it to Canvas, and exchange it with your peer review group, as directed by TA

Week 9, Step 3b: Participate in Peer Review Workshop, as scheduled by TA (3a & 3b combined: 5%)

Wednesday, Week 10, Step 4, 6/7/23, 11:59 pm PT: Edit, revise, proofread, complete, and turn in final draft (20%)

It is better to turn something in late than to turn in something plagiarized! We want to read your work!
