Office Hours (Thursday 1-2pm):  Zoom

Welcome to SIO 60!

My name is Noah and I am a MS/BS student in Physical Oceanography. I am super excited to be your TA this quarter and help you learn about our amazing atmosphere and ocean.

This quarter, I hope to be a resource for you both during and outside of class. Please feel free to ask me questions before or after lectures, during lab, and in my office hours (TBD). Office hours are the best time to chat in depth about course material, but if that time doesn't work for you, shoot me an email and we can find another time that works! I'm also reachable via email for small questions or logistical inquiries. Please make sure to include "SIO 60" in the subject line and I will try to get back to you within 24 hours.

Looking forward to a fun quarter with you all!

More about Noah

I got my BS in Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences with a focus in Physical Oceanography here at UC San Diego in 2024. As an undergraduate at UCSD I actually took this class and a wide range of others, from Ocean waves & acoustics to ocean acidification. I also worked as a field and lab assistant for the Coastal Processes Group (CPG), where I participated in LiDAR surveys, data quality control, and various experiments run by scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). This experience was amazing and confirmed my interests in physical oceanography.

Now, as a MS/BS student under Dr. Merrifield, my work focuses on understanding how waves, storms, and climate variability impact local beaches and coastlines. I analyze satellite-derived shoreline widths to identify decadal trends in beach accretion and erosion. By using buoy and wind data, I look into the causes of shoreline changes in Oceanside, CA. This research aims to improve our understanding of how coastal systems respond to environmental fluctuations and inform future coastal management strategies.

Beyond research, I love being in the ocean. I am the captain of the UCSD surf team and also play for the UCSD club baseball team. Surfing has given me a deep appreciation the ocean and nature, which fuels my research interests. I look forward to seeing everyone around campus—or out in the water!
