Late Submission Request Form
COURSE POLICY OVERVIEW
24-Hour Grace Period
All assignments have a built-in 24-hour grace period. That means if something is due Friday at 11:59pm, you can still submit it by Saturday at 11:59pm without it being counted late.
Note: Canvas might mark it “late,” but that won’t affect your grade as long as it’s within the 24-hour window.
Submitting After the Grace Period
If you need more time beyond the 24-hour grace period, that’s okay too — just submit a quick request. Aim to keep new deadlines within 3–4 days to stay on track. If you think you’ll need a week or more, please come to office hours or email us to make a plan.
HOW TO SUBMIT A REQUEST FOR A DEADLINE EXTENSION
Weekend note: If you submit your request over the weekend, you don’t need to wait for a reply — assume it’s approved and turn in the assignment by your new deadline.

"MAKE UP" ATTENDANCE POLICIES
- Occasional Absences: All meetings will be recorded and made available on canvas by the end of the day. If, due to extraneous circumstances, you are unable to attend a class you can "make-up" your participation grade by watching the video and completing the portfolio prompt during the allotted class time. You do not need to check in if you miss an occasional class, so long as you watch the recording and submit your portfolios by the end of the week.
- 2 or more consecutive absences: If for any reason you miss two or more consecutive weeks during the quarter you must visit our open office hours or schedule an appointment to check in on class assignments. Why? Because it is very easy to get behind during the fast-past quarter system, and the class is not designed for fully remote asynchronous learning. Failure to check in if you are not attending regular meetings during the scheduled time (either in person or remotely), may result in an automatic deduction of your participation and attendance grade in this class.
- Regular Absenteeism:* We acknowledge that there may be very valid reasons and/or unexpected situations may arise that might prevent you from regularly “live” attending class meetings. Please contact the instructor via email to let them know of any circumstances that might prevent you from regularly attending Thursday lecture meetings in person or via zoom.
- Discussion Section Weeks 2-4 only: you should plan to visit office hours at least once before week 5 if you miss a required discussion section (and/or if you enrolled late in the class) to discuss strategies and resources to ensure you succeed in the class.
*Unless you have made individual arrangements to take the course asynchronously, you should make a plan to visit open office hours to check in and/or to receive any supplementary learning support. Help us help you, stay in communication!
ADDITIONAL THINGS TO CONSIDER (MORE INFO ON LATE POLICY)
Point deductions. To maintain a system of accountability to both yourself and to the class, we will implement a strict policy of automatically deducting points unless you request an extension ahead of the assignment deadline. Point deductions vary according to the following areas of assessment:
- Portfolios: 1 point will be deducted for assignments submitted 2-7 days after the initial deadline (with an additional point each week there-after);
- Discussion boards: 5-points will be deducted for assignments submitted 2-7 days after the initial deadline (with an additional 5 points each week there-after)
- Class project: deadlines are flexible for those who choose to work in groups, to allow time to get together. 1-5 points may be deducted from planning worksheet, storyboard, or final submission, unless you or your group have submitted a deadline extension request.
Making up missing assignments. In general, our role is to help you get the most out of the class. To do so, you must maintain an open line of communication with us to be able to best support you according to your individual circumstances. If you have several late or missing assignments, please consider any of the following options that might apply:
- Contact us after a deadline us passed to see about options to get caught up: We understand that some extraneous circumstances may prevent you from submitting a request ahead of time. We will make exceptions provided that you contact within a reasonable timeline, so we can discuss strategies to help you get caught up.
- Periodically check in with yourself to assess your progress and capacities and take action as needed. See the Enrollment and Registration calendar for important deadlines to drop the class and/or change grade or registration status.
- Meet with your Academic Advisor / College as needed, they are there to support you and may have much better advice than your instructors (who do not handle registration or matters related to degree requirements). Our capacities are limited due to over enrollment; please do not wait until the end of the quarter to reach out to us as it may be too late to support you.
