In the long run it is probably wise to install the teaching edition on your own machine. At least initially, the student edition may be used instead in this course. The advantage of the student edition is a lot less download/storage volume, and no connection to the campus is required. Also consider the "cloud" version: see below.

1- Students must download all the v2023/*AllOS*.tar files into one directory/folder on their computer (huge files!).

2- Use 7-zip to extract all the tar files into a single directory: For each of the .tar files, right-click the file and select from the menu for 7-zip the option "Extract here". This will create the folder "AM_SIM_Abaqus_Extend.AllOS", with sub- folders 1, 2, ...

3- Run the suite installer setup.exe in the sub- folder 1 to install Abaqus on the local hard drive:
<download_dir>\AM_SIM_Abaqus_Extend.AllOS\1\setup.exe

Do not make selections different from the default.

4- During the installation the students will be asked to specify the license server information.
34000@its-flex-srv.ucsd.edu. Be sure you are at this point either directly connected to the UCSD network, or you must use VPN (see the next step for instructions: the group doesn't matter for the validation of the license server though).

5- When running Abaqus, the user must be either directly connected to the UCSD network, or must use VPN to connect to the UCSD network from the user's location. It is suggested to follow the instructions here: https://blink.ucsd.edu/technology/network/connections/off-campus/VPN/windows10.html. The VPN client is preconfigured. When connecting to run Abaqus, select the "2-step secured split" group.

Running Abaqus on the Mac

From a student (I do not have personal experience with this):

I been running Abaqus on my Mac using a Windows Virtual Machine called Parallels. I wanted to recommend it, in case it is helpful to any of my classmates. I have been using it for SolidWorks and Abaqus since sophomore year, because the latency on CloudLabs drives me crazy.

I just checked today and Parallels costs $97.49 as a 1 time purchase. Please note they hide the one time purchase behind a bunch of subscriptions on the website that are way more expensive.

I believe I have just about the slowest ARM based Mac (M1, 8GB unified memory), so anyone with an ARM based Mac (I think every MacBook since 2020) should be able to get performance just as good or better than mine.

The CloudLabs:AppStream is an Amazon/AWS cloud-based virtual desktop service providing access to a Windows desktop environment preset with requested applications.
