Instructions

Throughout this course, you will need to create and upload PDFs of you work to both Canvas and Gradescope.

The expectations for all uploaded work are as follows:

  • All work must be hand-written. Writing and drawing are important elements of practice to develop and reinforce knowledge. You will not be allowed to type or cut and paste work for any file upload assignment. You may choose to use a tablet with a stylus (if you have access to this type of technology) or paper and pencil/pen (whatever works best for you).
  • All work must be legible. In order to grade your work and provide appropriate feedback, the grader(s) will need to be able to see and read all of your work. It is important that you write and draw clearly. It is also important that any scan or photo of your work is clear and includes all necessary work. If you are scanning your work, please review the file before you upload it to ensure that you can read it and none of your work got cut off.
  • Gradescope is the grading tool we will be using to assess your hand-written work (for both Canvas and Gradescope submissions). In order to use this tool, you will need to upload your work a single PDF file. If you have multiple pages, you will need to scan them together or attached them into single file. If you are capturing an image file, you will need to convert it to PDF file in order to submit it. There are many different ways you can accomplish this. I recommend trying several and finding tools and a method that works best for you. I would strongly encourage you to share what works and what doesn’t work with the class.

In order to practice, you are asked to complete the following exercise.

Directions:

  1. Using a tablet or paper and pencil/pen, create a hand-written, legible, two (or more) page document, and submit it as a single PDF file.
  2. On page 1, draw 10 water molecules in a beaker.
  3. On page 2, answer the following question in a minimum of two sentences: What, in your view, is science? What makes science (or a scientific discipline such as chemistry, physics, biology, etc.) different from other disciplines of inquiry (e.g., religion, philosophy)?
  1. Submit your single PDF file for both the Canvas Upload Practice and the Gradescope Upload Practice assignments by Monday, August 2nd at 11:59 pm.
  2. Post your preferred applications, tool, technology, and methods in the discussion forum. You may also post any questions, comments, or concerns you might have in the discussion forum as well. This is a space from we can all learn from each other’s failures and successes.
